Post Modernism- Summarised

Postmodernism is the movement in the arts that occurred during the 1950's, the term was applied to a whole host of movements, many in art, music, and literature, that reacted against a range of tendencies during the "modernism" period (which is now defined as any art before the 1950's) and are typically marked by revival of historical elements and techniques. Specifically in film many techniques are used that define postmodern cinema:
  • Bricolage
  • Fragmentation
  • Self-referential
  • Micro-politics
  • intertextuality
  • Pastiche/Homage/Parody
  • Bethos
  • An awareness of post production
  • The ability for an audience to interpret the text and create their own meaning.
One Aspect of Postmodernism is that whatever it is, it will be inspired by something that has already been. This is the main reason that some believe that all art is now Postmodern as opposed to modern. For this reason postmodernism has been quoted as an "aesthetic of quotations".
